What is the SMS Dashboard, and how do I track SMS usage?

Use the SMS Dashboard to monitor usage and see when a location is approaching or exceeding its included messages.

Written by Jason Wiese

The SMS Usage Dashboard shows how many messages a location has sent during a billing month and how that compares with the location's included SMS allotment. Use it to monitor usage and see when a location is approaching or exceeding its included messages.

Open the SMS Usage Dashboard

In Xplor Growth, go to Settings > SMS Usage Dashboard. Anyone with access to a location can view that location's SMS usage.

The dashboard is read-only. You can view usage, but you can't change the location's included SMS allotment.

You can also open the dashboard from an SMS usage notice in Inbox by selecting View usage. The dashboard opens in a new tab.

Usage Data

The dashboard shows the selected location's SMS usage for the month.

Usage Period

Use the month picker to view usage for any of the last 12 calendar months.

Each month is measured from the 1st through the last day of the month in UTC.

This means the usage shown in Xplor Growth may differ from totals you see in Twilio, which uses a local timezone. The dashboard also counts messages rather than message segments, so that Twilio Console totals may differ for that reason.

Total Usage

The Total count shows all outgoing SMS sent by the location during the selected month. Finance uses this number for billing.

The total includes:

  • Marketing SMS

  • Transactional SMS

  • Undelivered outgoing SMS

It does not include:

  • Failed sends

  • Incoming replies

The progress bar compares the location's total SMS usage with its included monthly allotment. The bar changes color when usage reaches 90% of the allotment.

The SMS allotment defaults to 2000 messages per month. Sending does not stop when a location reaches its included allotment. It still sends additional messages and bills them separately. The dashboard does not display SMS pricing.

Marketing and Transactional SMS

The dashboard includes separate Marketing and Transactional cards for each phone number that is set up. A card is hidden when that SMS type isn't configured for the location.

The marketing and transactional counts may add up to less than the combined total because the cards show usage by phone number, while the total reflects all outgoing SMS counted for billing.

Usage Notices

Notices help you monitor SMS usage throughout the month. The SMS usage notice shows:

  • This month's usage

  • Days remaining in the month

  • A link to the SMS Usage Dashboard

When a location reaches 90% of its included allotment, a dismissible notice appears in:

  • SMS Usage Dashboard

  • Inbox

  • Transactional SMS

  • SMS campaigns

The notice remains visible for the rest of the month unless someone dismisses it.

The account admins also receive email notifications when usage reaches 90% and 100% of the included allotment.
